How to Role Play

Even if you have played an e-mail RPG before, please read this information in case we do something differently.

Posts

What is an RP (role-play) post?
An RP post is the e-mail message you send to the group to tell what your character is doing.
What is an RP supposed to contain?
Basically an RP contains anything your character says or does! It can be what your character is thinking to himself (or herself), what he/she says out loud to someone else, or any actions he/she does. It can be short (a few lines) or long (several paragraphs or even pages.) It should be written in 3rd person past tense in the form of a story.

Example:

Mareth walked up to the table and sat down gracefully. "Who now will join in this mission?" she asked with a determined look in her blue eyes.

And of course if that was an actual post you would answer as to whether or not you would join the mission. You might type something like...

John Doe stood up, ready to pledge his loyalty, and said in a shaky but proud tone, "I will join you."

To see how write your own beginning RP, look at this example.

For further examples or RPs have a look at some recent recent posts.

If you still DO NOT understand how RPs are written, please contact us for more information.

Co-posts

What is a co-post? Why use co-posts?
Co-posts are RPs written by more than one person in order to save time. Instead of spending days (or weeks) to hold a conversation with another character, you can get together (through private email, AIM/MSN, IRC, or any other means available to you) and write a post togther. You CANNOT post without the permission of the other person(s) involved.

Example:

Moloth pulled out his dagger from his side pouch and stabbed Tay insanely.***

Moloth can't do that without Tay's permission!

...which means you cannot do the same without the explicit permission of the person with whom you want to RP. Tay would have to tell the list that it's all right for Moloth to do this. This applies to all actions and all conversations that you engage in with another character. Do not put words in the mouth of another character or make another character do an action without the owner's permission! Controlling another player's character without his/her permission is unfair to the other player AND it is against the rules set out in the charter of DoP. You can control the actions of certain non-player-characters (NPCs) such as servants or characters of your own making that are useful to you. Be sure to have your NPCs behave "in character" for whatever they may be, whether servant or otherwise.
